I began writing and making DIY fanzines in the pre-internet era, a cut and pasted, photocopied labor of love that I continued well into the post-internet era. After working as a litigation attorney representing labor unions in Los Angeles for six years, I returned to writing, earning an MFA in fiction.
My most recent work, Stubs: 2001-2010, is a memoir structured around ticket stubs. It was named one of the best books of the year by Pulitzer Prize finalist Ed Park. More about my writing can be found at: www.johnjaewonkim.com
I have taught writing at the University of Maryland since 2013. In 2018, I was awarded the English Department's Teaching Excellence Award for Professional Track faculty.
