Adam Lloyd
I began teaching in the English department in 2007, starting with Academic English and was the founder and editor-in-chief of Interpolations, the English department’s first-ever peer-reviewed journal of undergraduate academic writing.
In 2009, I moved to my primary focus of teaching business writing. In addition, I have taught courses in technical writing, co-created and taught the courses Writing in the Wireless World and ENGL 491: Digital Rhetoric at the Dawn of Extra-Human Discourse (which explored the recent rise of Artificial Intelligence in academic, creative, and workplace writing).
A firm believer in the idea that effective writing can only be taught with real audiences, every semester, my business writing classes partner with a new company to create deliverables that will be used in their workplace. My students and I have worked with organizations such as the American Heart Association, 3M, Quake Capital Venture Fund, Marble AR, Rectify, SwineTech, See ROSE Go, Optimal Networks, Squared Away, and NeoSystems (to name a few).
I have and continue to serve on numerous departmental and university-wide committees, including my fourth term on the University Senate, the Senate Faculty Affairs Subcommittee, the English Department’s Executive Committee, and the ARHU Collegiate Council.
In addition to a PhD in English, I hold advanced degrees in philosophy and national security studies.
Outside academia, I have worked as a freelance journalist, writing features on dining, travel, cigars, business, music, and gambling. My articles have appeared in publications such as Virginia Living, Cigar Aficionado, Heartland USA, Cruise Travel Magazine, the Washington Post, United Airlines’ Hemispheres, and British Airways’ High Life Magazine.
In the early 2000s, I was also the founder and CEO of a start-up company, GradFree, which had a semi-successful run for four years.
