Flieger Edits New Edition of Tolkien's "On Fairy-Stories"
July 06, 2010
Professor Verlyn Flieger has edited a new book-length edition of J.R.R. Tolkien's On Fairy-Stories with Douglas A. Anderson.
On Fairy-Stories, dated to 1939, is considered to be Tolkien's most studied and most quoted critical essay. According to Flieger, On Fairy-Stories "defined his conception of fantasy as a literary form, which led to the writing of The Lord of the Rings." Flieger and Anderson's new edition, published by HarperCollins, includes a history of the writing of the essay, extensive notes on Tolkien's allusions in the text, and commentaries.
