Applications for QCB and Travel Grants

The English Graduate Office is inviting applications from students in English and CMLT for the next round of QCB Research and Travel Grants. The QCB Research and Travel Grants, are awarded to support graduate student research requiring travel to archives, special collections, and other unique resources in connection with PhD dissertation and, in rare  cases, MA thesis research.   In 1996 the department set aside some travel funds for this purpose.  An anonymous donor, wishing to enhance our ability to support graduate student travel for research, made a generous gift that increased available funds. The donor wishes the gift funds to be devoted specifically to supporting archival research.

 The QCB Research and Travel Grants are supported by a fund comprising both departmental and donor monies.  The departmental monies are directed toward a range of research venues and subjects, while the donor monies are directed toward archival research, with some preferencetoward British literature.  Funds are awarded on a competitive basis, through an application process in which students submit proposals for review by a committee of three members of the graduate faculty.  There are two review processes each year, one at the beginning of the fall semester for travel in the following January 1‑ June 30 period, and one  at the beginning of the spring semester for travel in the July 1‑  December 31 period.

 Applications should be no more than three pages in length and should include: 1) concise description of the project for which the research is being undertaken; 2) a detailed description of the research to be undertaken, including, for example, the library or other institution to be visited, the particular archive or collection to be consulted, the  reason why the research must be done on site, the amount of time  anticipated for the research, and so on;  3) a detailed budget. In  addition, the applicant should have his/her dissertation director (or, in rare cases, thesis advisor) forward a letter of endorsement to the  Graduate office.

Students wishing to apply for a QCB Grant for travel in the period Jan. 1 through June 30, 2010 should have applications and letters of endorsement in the Graduate Office by Tuesday, Dec. 1st, 2009.
