Tunahan Çakmakçı is interested in thinking about poetic form, thought, and feeling through 18th- and 19th-century discussions of aesthetics, emotion, and imagination. His undergraduate thesis examined poetic form’s capacity to act as affective metaphors in Victorian lyrics and cultivate intimacy between the poet and the reader. He currently studies the ways in which Romantic and Victorian poems act as social objects mediating aesthetic encounters and contain insights regarding how beauty is positioned, approached, understood, and socialized in everyday life in the long 19th century and the present. Tunahan takes pleasure in thinking about his scholarship as an experimental playground where new understandings about today can unfold.
