Richard Cross taught at Dartmouth and UCLA before coming to Maryland, in 1983, to chair the English Department. He has served as visiting professor at the universities of Würzburg, Göttingen, Freiburg, Mannheim, and Tübingen. His publications include Flaubert and Joyce: The Rite of Fiction (Princeton) and Malcolm Lowry: A Preface to His Fiction (Chicago) as well as articles on Melville, Joyce, Ford Madox Ford, Edwin Muir, Faulkner, Lowry, Bellow, Richard Eberhart, Randall Jarrell, Flannery O'Connor, Ted Hughes, D. M. Thomas, and W. G. Sebald, translations from the German (with Christa Wolf Cross), short fiction, personal essays, and many book reviews and review essays.
