ENGL488G Rhetoric of Style

This course will introduce you to the study of style in language: how word choice, sentence structure, prosody and rhythm, passage construction, and audience involvement contribute toward the meaning and rhetorical effect of texts. We will pursue two kinds of competences: theoretical reflection (analysis of passages, accompanied by meta-reflections on style) and practical production (exercises in re-writing and stylistic shaping). Our readings will occasionally involve looking back at historical practices, but the main focus will be on contemporary genres in English.
