ENGL460 - Archival Research Methods in English Studies/Activism in the Archives

This class introduces approaches for doing archival research in English studies, exploring how researchers develop their scope and practices of study and how they access and use archival materials electronically and on site to further their research questions.

What types of activism have UMD students engaged in? How have they participated in arguments for civil, gender, sexual, and disability rights? How have they intervened in conversations about war, politics, racism, and legislation and, how have they sought to make UMD more equitable and safe?

These are the questions that will drive our work this semester as we turn to the UMD archives to find answers. Students in ENGL 460 will examine historical artifacts and documents held in the UMD archives with the goal of recovering historical student activism on campus. Our ultimate work will be to move our investigations beyond the classroom by producing a public-facing mini-exhibit that pronounces the value of the activist artifacts we discover.
