ENGL449A The Latinx Short Story

Advanced study of selected works by U.S. Latinx writers.

This course will examine a broad range of short stories and essays by Latinx and Latin American writers across genres and time periods. Beginning with foundational texts by writers such as Maria Cristina Mena, we will also focus on work by contemporary writers such as Jennine CapĆ³ Crucet and Carmen Maria Machado. Genres will include speculative fiction, myth and sacred stories, and comics. We will consider formal and stylistic approaches as well as connections to politics, history, and social contexts.
