ENGL439E Faulkner and the Rumor of Race

When Faulkner writes that "public talking makes truth," he is exposing the ways in which a social construct like "race" gets gossiped into being. After exploring how Faulkner takes us into the heart of this process, we will turn to three women writers who engage with his legacy: Eudora Welty, Toni Morrison, and Louise Erdrich.

An intensive study of a single writer, or a handful of writers, to understand the shifts in the writer's craft and cultural influence, both past and present.
