ENGL439 B Hemingway and the Pathos of Gender

Hemingway is fascinated by the pleasures and constraints attendant upon being born in the body of a "man" or a "woman," and, across the course of his career, his sense of gendered identity undergoes considerable change. Reading stories and novels written across a span of forty years, we will engage in a developmental study of how one imagination continues to grapple with and to revise its sense of the price people pay in their search for romantic love.

An intensive study of a single writer, or a handful of writers, to understand the shifts in the writer's craft and cultural influence, both past and present.
