ENGL437 Contemporary American Literature

Prose, poetry, drama of living American writers. Current cultural and social issues.

We will focus on experimental fiction, poetry, and essays published during the twenty-first century. How have writers responded to new technologies and new media? To political events? To economic crisis? To environmental fears? How have writers pioneered new literary forms or repurposed old forms for new purposes? Writers we might read include Helen DeWitt, Ling Ma, Ottessa Moshfegh, Eugene Lim, Ben Lerner, and John Keene, and Valeria Luiselli.
