ENGL346 Twentieth Century Fiction

Major British, American, and other fiction writers of the twentieth century studied in the context of the broad global, intellectual, and artistic interests of the century.

This course will survey the major historical types of twentieth century fiction, including realist, modernist, and postmodern. We will read the fiction of a wide variety of authors, including European, US Ethnic, Latin American, African, Asian, and postcolonial writers as we focus on the basic elements of fiction and how they change over time and across cultures. Longer novels to be studied are likely to include Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse and probably Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart. Major requirements: two 8 page papers and a midterm. Format: lecture/discussion.
