ENGL329M Ecomedia

The advent of the Anthropocene is roughly coeval with the emergence of modern media. This course will investigate this coincidence, looking at how media have represented humanity’s increasingly intense influence on the environment, beginning with the rise of the modern industrial state in the mid-nineteenth century. A central concern of the course will be the question of Nature and the relationship of media to this concept. We also will consider how media industries do not just reflect but also themselves impact the environment. Texts and viewings will draw from literature, cinema, art, history, criticism, and theory and will include Darwin, Stoker, Uexkull, Carson, Smith, Painlevé, the BBC Natural History Unit, Bazin, Haraway, Starosielski.
