Program Grants
LCS will again make financial support available for academic programming. Those guidelines are outlined below.
The next deadline for submission is March 25, 2019, for programs scheduled for 2019-2020. Legacy Lecture Series proposals are due as part of the spring proposal cycle.
As funding allows, the fall deadline for submission is October 1, 2019.
Funds are available to faculty, staff, lecturers, undergraduate and graduate students in English and Comparative Literature for conferences, reading groups, speakers, performances, seminars, workshops, class-related activities, and other initiatives. The goal of this call is to facilitate activities that
- foster the advancement of multidisciplinary and collaborative scholarship in the humanities;
- encourage scholars and students to think beyond their immediate periods and areas of expertise;
- offer opportunities for exchanges among students, alumni, lecturers, faculty, staff, and members of the general public;
- spur new ideas, daring scholarship, and creative activities
- consolidate and extend the global perspective on teaching and scholarship characteristic of the English Department.
The completed application form should include a 500-word description of the project and its target audience, a list of the participants with affiliations, and a budget that explains how the money will be spent and includes plans for co-sponsorships. If you need assistance as you develop your budget, contact Karen Nelson (knelson@umd.edu). Cross-departmental proposals MUST have an English Department sponsor.
Special consideration will given to proposals that
- Address the Center’s theme for 2018-2020: RESISTANCE
- Involve two or more area groups
- Are comparative and/or interdisciplinary
Examples include: $400 for the purchase of books for a reading group; $200 for a movie rental and licensing fees for a group discussion, or a sum to cover travel expenses and an honorarium for a speaker. Budgeting guidelines for honoraria are available here.
Applications may be made for grants up to $1,000. Small grants are encouraged. Please note: book groups are capped at $400. Applications also may be made for grants up to $2,000 to support large-scale events such as conferences. If you plan to apply for a $2,000 grant, consult with the CLCS director or associate director prior to submitting your application.
Grants do not support individual research projects, travel costs (department travel policies are here), equipment purchases (instructional & informational technology cfp is here). They cannot be used to hire research assistants.
Eligibility
This call is open to undergraduate English majors, graduate students, lecturers, faculty, and staff of the English department for public events. Grants do not cover individual research projects or travel and cannot be used to hire research assistants. Projects must take place on campus.
