Symposium on Sustainable Modernities on Friday April 4, 1:30 pm

April 02, 2014 English | Center for Literary and Comparative Studies

SUSTAINABLE MODERNITIES Friday, April 4, 2014 - 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Corcoran Gallery of Art, 500 17th Street NW, Washington, DC The Potomac Center for the Study of Modernity is pleased to announce its spring symposium, Sustainable Modernities.

Sustainable Modernities brings together scholars from several different disciplines to speak about the relationship between modernity and sustainability. Each speaker, drawing on his or her own research, will speak to the following question: is modernity inherently hostile to sustainability or not? Such a question deliberately raises the prospect of multiple “modernities,” about which speakers will offer critical analysis. Although modern societies have often disregarded the environmental impacts of their endeavors, modernity has also made possible ideas about ecology, environmental justice, and sustainable human existence. By considering examples of environmental activism generated within (or against) industrial society, the symposium will ask which of these serve as credible and practical models of sustainability around the world now.

Speakers will include Warren T. Byrd, Jr., Professor Emeritus, School of Architecture, University of Virginia and Principal, Nelson Byrd Woltz, Landscape Architects; Dana R. Fisher, Associate Professor, Sociology, University of Maryland and Director of The Program on Society and the Environment; Linda Monahan, Ph.D. Candidate, American Studies, The College of William and Mary; and Paul Outka, Associate Professor, English, University of Kansas and Immediate Past President, Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment.

Chair: Alan C. Braddock, Ralph H. Wark Associate Professor of Art History and American Studies, The College of William and Mary
