Sigma Tau Delta Reaches Out With Students for Students

Students For Students (SFS) is a traveling tutoring clinic founded and sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta, University of Maryland's English Honors Society.
SFS was founded in Fall 2013 by President of Sigma Tau Delta, Lena Stypeck. SFS is unique to the University, but aligns with the national chapter's shared mission and vision for increased community outreach.
This spring, SFS visits Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. During a visit, SFS members work one-on-one or one-on-two with a high school student on their college or scholarship application essay. Typically, SFS members offer guidance to their students in way of picking prompts, reviewing essay objectives and goals, and brainstorming and proofing final drafts. SFS keeps their student's energy and interest levels at a peak with a supply of donuts at each session.
Lena is impressed at how quickly the clinic has taken off, the interest shown by the tutors involved, and at the receptiveness of the partner schools.
"We have more than doubled the amount of time we tutor at Northwestern, and even though our semester schedule is technically over, we are still receiving requests to continue hosting workshops for the rest of the semester. Most students just need more practice and one-on-one attention, which is exactly what we offer," said Lena.
