March 16, 2011 English

Distinguished classicist Mary Beard, Professor of Classics at Cambridge, will speak on campus Thursday, April 7, at 4:00 pm in Tydings 0117.

Professor Beard is the 2011 Mellon Lecturer at the National Gallery of Art, where she will give six Sunday lectures (March 27-May 8) on "The Twelve Caesars: Images of Power from Ancient Rome to Salvador Dali." The author of numerous books, she recently received the Wolfson History Prize for The Fires of Vesuvius: Pompeii Lost and Found (Harvard 2008). Professor Beard is also classics editor of the Times Literary Supplement.  For those unfamiliar with Prof. Beard, her Times of London blog, “A Don’s Life” (http://timesonline.typepad.com/dons_life/) will give you a convenient taste of her wonderfully wry take on Classics, Life, etc.
