Montpelier's Spring History Lecture Series with Michael Olmert, April 16, 7:30 pm

This is the second of three history lectures on the beverages, libations and social culture of 18th century life. In this talk, join us as Mike Olmert speaks on colonial coffee house culture!
On April 16 he is speaking at the Montpelier Mansion, a 1781-85 plantation house in nearby Laurel, Maryland. His topic will be the idea of coffee and coffeehouses. He'll unpack coffeehouses as places of discussion, deliberation, anger, and sedition. Among other attractions, the coffeehouse was both a library and a play-ground as well as a way-station on the road to parliamentary democracy. He'll also talk about the research that went into the restoration of Charlton's Coffeehouse on Duke of Gloucester Street in Colonial Williamsburg.
