Michael Dirda: Petrou Reader in Residence, Spring 2011

January 12, 2011 English | Center for Literary and Comparative Studies

The English Department is bringing Michael Dirda, "Book World" columnist for the Washington Post, to campus for the spring semester as the "Petrou Reader in Residence."

He will teach a seminar for undergraduates titled "The Classic Adventure Novel" (described here), visit undergraduate courses (especially 301, the major gateway course), hold office hours, and give a public lecture in the first part of the semester.

To welcome him, the English department will host a reception on Wednesday, January 26, 2011, from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm in the second floor lobby of Tawes Hall. Please join us!

Kent Cartwight, Chair of the Department, coordinated this long-term visit as the culmination in a two-year series of events to support the theme "Reading: Histories, Practices, Futures." This topic has served as the umbrella under which the Center for Literary & Comparative Studies, directed by Robert Levine, has coordinated its inaugural semesters.

Dirda's visit is sponsored by the Department of English, the Center for Literary & Comparative Studies, and with funding from the Bebe Koch Petrou Foundation.
