In Memoriam: Robert Myers

Robert Manson Myers, who taught in the Department of English at the University of Maryland until his retirement in 1986, passed away on January 3, 2014.

Professor Emeritus Robert Myers was born in Charlottesville, Virginia on May 29, 1921. He attended Vanderbilt University at age sixteen and graduated summa cum laude four years later. After graduating from Vanderbilt, Myers attended Harvard University and received his master's and following, attended Columbia for his doctorate. Myers taught at Yale, William & Mary, and Tulane before coming to the University of Maryland where he taught until 1986. Myers authored several books including The Children of Pride, A True Story of Georgia and the Civil War, praised in a front-page review by The New York Times and later lauded by the paper as "one of the five significant books of 1972" and as one of the important, lasting books of the twentieth century. Meyers also published several plays, including as his 2004 work,  Sixes and Sevens, Scenes from a Marriage.
