Greek Translations of Boethius' Rhetorical Works

March 17, 2011 English

Elizabeth A. Fisher, Professor of Classics at George Washington University, will be presenting Greek Translations of Boethius' Rhetorical Works in Thirteenth-Century Constantinope: 'Throttle Them with Their Own Syllogisms'

Professor Fisher, a distinguished scholar of Byznatine studies, has published extensively on the translation and reception of Latin literature in medieval Byzantium, on East-West relations, on literary pedagogy, style in translation, and on ekphrasis and rhetoric.

In this talk, accompanied by coffee and dessert, she will discuss the reception of Boethius' works in rhetorically sophisticated Byzantium, within the context of the strained and highly polemicized relations between Byzantium and the Latin West.
