Folger's Annual Emily Dickinson Birthday Tribute

November 29, 2017 English | Center for Literary and Comparative Studies

Join us on Monday, December 11 at 7:30pm, as we celebrate the genius of Emily Dickinson with scholar and poet Sandra Gilbert. This third reading in the 2017/18 O.B. Hardison Poetry Series is co-sponsored with The Poetry Society of America.

With poems many can recite, such as “Because I could not stop for Death,” Dickinson’s work is rich with poetic contemplation about the end of life. For this annual tribute evening, the renowned poet, author, and feminist literary critic Sandra Gilbert explores this contemplation of death and grief, reading from Dickinson’s poetry and her own.

Gilbert has published numerous collections of poetry, including the Patterson Prize-winning Ghost Volcano and Kissing the Bread: New and Selected Poems 1969-1999. Other work includes Death’s Door: Modern Dying and the Ways We Grieve, and The Madwoman in the Attic: The Woman Writer and the Nineteenth-Century Literary Imagination, co-written with Susan Gubar and considered one of the most influential works of contemporary scholarship.

Following the reading is a complimentary wine reception, where Dickinson's famous black cake will be served (provided by The Suga Chef), and an opportunity to purchase books and have your book signed.

Tickets to this event are $15. Click below or contact our box office at 202.544.7077.
