Many of the department's faculty attended the Modern Language Association's Annual Meeting in Boston in January.

Bob Levine gave a paper on "Frederick Douglass and Textual Editing" in the panel on "Fault Lines in American Literary History" and also chaired a panel on David Walker. Edlie Wong presented a paper entitled "Translating Sentimentalism: Boycott, Immigration Law, and Chinese Exclusion" at the recent MLA, and her recently published essay, "Comparative Racialization, Immigration Law, and James Williams's Life and Adventures" received honorable mention for the Norman Foerster Prize for the best essay published in American Literature for 2012. Martha Nell Smith was elected to the Gay Studies Division Executive Committee.
