University of Maryland English Professor Martha Nell Smith recently joined the podcast "Historical Homos" to discuss Emily Dickinson’s relationship with her sister-in-law, Susan Gilbert Dickinson, and its significance to understanding the poet’s life and work.

Smith, an Emily Dickinson scholar and editor and coordinator of the Dickinson Electronic Archives, has spent decades examining Dickinson’s letters, poems and relationship with Susan. Her research has helped challenge longstanding portrayals of Dickinson as an isolated, reclusive figure and brought greater attention to the intimacy and complexity of their relationship.
