English Awards and Scholarships

The English Department would like to congratulate our majors on the awards and achievements they have received during their time as an undergraduate.

Lena Stypeck, senior English and Education major and president of Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honors Society, recently received the Sigma Tau Delta Regent Scholarship for $1,000. Stypeck was nominated for a Sigma Tau Delta Scholarship and wrote an essay that set high standards. She was awarded the Regent Scholarship for being one of the highest scoring applicants in the Eastern region. Lena plans to use her scholarship towards her graduate studies at Johns Hopkins, School of Education, where she will receive her M.Ed.

Several English majors were also winners and finalists in the Jiménez-Porter Literary Prize, which is open to all undergraduates at the University of Maryland. First place winners received $100; second place received $75, and third received $50.

Laura Pavlo, a double-major in English and Studio Art, Creative Writing minor, and member of the English Honors Society Sigma Tau Delta,  was awarded second place for “The F Train Downtown.” Norine McKee, English and Chinese double-major with a minor in Creative Writing, was awarded third place for “The Woodholt Hitchhiker.” Other English majors, Siobhan Cully, Shannon James, Lyla Lawless, Christopher Stevenson, and Reis Vance, were among the finalists.

Allison Hartley, English and History double-major, was awarded first place in the poetry competition for “the glass ball turrets sit in lines at the factory.” Finalists included English majors Stacia Odenwald, Shelby Cain, and Tarika Sankar.
