Carla Peterson Wins Book Award!

Carla Peterson’s book Black Gotham: A Family History of African-Americans in Ninteenth-Century New York City (Yale UP, 2011) has won the 2011 New York City Book Award for History, sponsored by the New York Society Library.  According to the announcement, “The winning book must evoke the spirit of New York City, with the city playing an essential, invigorating role beyond that of setting.”  Carla will be presented the award at a public ceremony on May 2.
