Mitchell S. Jackson, a native of Portland, Oregon, is the author of the novel, The Residue Years, and the nonfiction book, Survival Math: Notes on an All-American Family. His profile of Ahmaud Arbery in Runner’s World, Twelve Minutes and a Life, won the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in Feature Writing and a 2021 National Magazine Award in Feature Writing. His writing has been featured on This American Life as well as in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Harper’s Magazine, Harper’s Bazaar Magazine, The Paris Review, The Washington Post Magazine, Time Magazine, The Guardian, and elsewhere. Jackson is a columnist for Esquire Magazine. His next novel John of Watts is forthcoming from Farrar, Straus and Giroux.
Born in Mexico and a resident of the United States for over two decades, Cristina Rivera Garza is a multifaceted author of fiction, essays, and scholarship, including nearly twenty works in Spanish. Her most recently translated novel, The Taiga Syndrome (trans. Suzanne Jill Levine and Aviva Kana; originally published as El mal de la taiga, 2012), won the 2019 Shirley Jackson Award. Her hybrid nonfiction collection, Grieving: Dispatches from a Wounded Country (trans. Sarah Booker; originally published in Spanish in 2011), was a finalist for the 2020 National Book Critics’ Circle Award for Criticism. Rivera Garza is Distinguished Professor in Hispanic Studies and Director of Creative Writing at the University of Houston and was awarded a MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Grant in 2020.
