ENGL 438C: Graphic Novels by People of Color

This course will introduce you to comics and graphic novels by writers and artists of color.

While the form of the comics and graphic novels will share that they foreground visual art, or drawing, as a vehicle for narrative, we will be reading both works of fiction and non-fiction. More specifically, we will read works from a range of different genres to include fantasy, personal narrative, memoir, historical fiction, and others. Together, these works will show you the range of contemporary graphic narrative forms. Readings are: Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics, Mira Jacob’s Good Talk: A Memoir in Conversations, Jaime Hernandez’s Perla La Loca, Victor LaValle’s Destroyer; Octavia Butler’s Kindred, and Damian Duffy’s Kindred: A Graphic Novel Adaptation.
