Reasons to Declare English

There is a two-step process to change your major to English.

  1. Meet with an English advisor
  2. Meet with an ARHU advisor

Meeting with an English Advisor

Please use this link to schedule an appointment with an English advisor and select the "Prospective Student: English Major Declare" option, or email english@umd.edu. Your English advisor will discuss the English major requirements with you, review any courses you've already taken, create an academic plan for the next few semesters, and provide you with the paperwork to change your major.

Meeting with an ARHU Advisor

An appointment is required for students to complete their change of major with ARHU advising.

To make an appointment with an ARHU advisor, for a date after you've met with an English advisor, please schedule online at go.umd.edu/arhuscheduling. Your ARHU advisor will review your General Education, College, and University requirements; review your academic plan for the next few semesters; and officially change your major to English.
