Instructions for Applicants to the MA & PhD Programs

Submit the complete application and all supporting materials by December 8, 2011.  The on-line application may be found at http://www.vprgs.umd.edu/gems/admission.htm.

A complete application package will include the on-line application and the materials to be uploaded using the English Supplemental Application screen that will become available to you once you submit your electronic application to the Graduate School. These materials include the following:

1. GRE Scores. Official scores of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) should be sent directly to the admissions office by the Educational Testing Service. The University of Maryland, College Park institutional code for the GRE and GMAT is 5814.

2. Statement of Goals, Research Interests, and Experiences.  (This statement is a requirement for applications to UMD programs.) The statement should address relevant aspects of your educational experience, the focus of your academic interests, and reasons for applying to our program. You must upload your statement by using the English Supplemental Application screen.

3. Official transcripts of your entire college/university record (undergraduate and graduate), including records of any advanced work done at another institution. Include one copy of all official transcripts (academic records) issued by the institutions' registrars in sealed envelopes. These should be sent directly to:

The courses listed may include literature courses, language courses, and any other courses you deem relevant to your intended degree program. You must upload the unofficial course list by using the Supplemental Application screen.

5. Three letters of recommendation. In your on-line application, please complete fully the information requested for your recommenders and ask them to submit their letters electronically. We strongly urge you to encourage your recommenders to use this option, as there may be a delay in processing recommendations that are sent in hard copy. When it is impossible for the recommender to use the on-line system, s/he may submit the letter to

6. A single sample of critical writing of approximately 12-20 pp. You must upload the writing sample by using the Supplemental Application screen. While we encourage you to submit your best writing sample, we prefer a writing sample in your declared field of interest.

Once your application is submitted, please check on-line to find out if all of your materials have been received.
