Shakespeare and the Comedy of Enchantment was published by Oxford University Press.
Emeritus Professor Kent Cartwright’s new book, Shakespeare and the Comedy of Enchantment, has just been published by Oxford University Press. The book argues that “enchantment constitutes a key emotional and intellectual dimension of Shakespeare’s comedies.”
This is the first comprehensive study of enchantment as an organizing motif in Shakespeare's comedies, offering a defense of dramatic comedy as a genre and addresses modern disenchantment. Each chapter of Shakespeare and the Comedy of Enchantment focuses on an aspect, device, or trope of Shakespearean comedy to provide a rich description of techniques related to enchantment, exploring Shakespearean comedy in relation to comic theory and to contemporaneous Italian and Tudor comedy.
