Shelton and CLCS guests were awarded for their article "Dressed but Not Tryin’ to Impress: Black Women Deconstructing 'Professional' Dress"

Congratulations to UMD English professor Dr. Cecilia Shelton and CLCS guests Dr. Brittany Hull and Dr. Temptaous Mckoy, whose work was selected for the Best of the Journals in Rhetoric and Composition 2021.

Their article "Dressed but Not Tryin’ to Impress: Black Women Deconstructing “Professional” Dress," draws from a legacy of Black women scholars who "refuse to capitulate their language for standardized language praxis." The writers opt to utilize "non-standard English as a way to reaffirm our various identities, and as a way to speak back against white supremacist standards of language in academia."

The Journal of Multimodal Rhetorics, or JOMR, is a completely online, open-access journal featuring essays and other items that examine multimodality in all of its cultural, material, temporal, and pedagogical manifestations.
