Susanna Compton Underland defended her dissertation, Sacred Spaces, Secular Fictions: Nineteenth-Century American Literature, in August 2018. Her research interests include nineteenth-century American literature, domestic fiction, religion and secularism. A portion of this project is published in Leviathan: A Journal of Melville Studies, under the title "Sentimentalism and Secularism in Herman Melville's Pierre." Underland teaches pre- and post-1865 surveys of American literature, introductory composition, and courses on domesticity and women's writing.
